Young employees flout rules on data security

Filed under: Risk Management — Stephanie on December 28, 2011

70 percent of young employees ignore IT policy according to a new survey, and many young workers believe that policies need updating to meet with changing work practices. This is worrying news to those working in senior risk management jobs in a time when cyber attacks are reaching new heights.

The Annual Security Report and Connected World Report from Cisco has highlighted that 33 percent of young workers and students surveyed from across 14 countries revealed they do not consider disregarding company IT policy as an issue.

2,800 people were surveyed and 22 percent revealed that they were required to access unauthorised applications and programs in order to fulfil their job role. Another 19 percent conceded that IT policies were not thoroughly enforced by those in IT security jobs. 18 percent admitted when carrying out their jobs they had no time to consider policies whilst 16 percent said upholding the policies was inconvenient. 15 percent admitted to forgetting about them and another 14 percent said there were often left unsupervised.

A massive 61 percent felt that they held no responsibility for protecting company data and devices and that those in IT were accountable instead.

Cisco’s CIO, Rebecca Jacoby commented:

“The role of IT in any business is to successfully bring together technology architectures and business architectures. As workforces become increasingly mobile, the shift in IT infrastructure means that security and policy are no longer an ‘add-on’, but the highest priority.”

The findings highlight a need to tighten policies regarding risk and network threat and to ensure that there are people in information risk jobs.
