Filed under: Information Risk and Security — Jonathan on January 24, 2012

Those in information security jobs can look back on 2011 and expect an exciting and challenging time in 2012. Developing excellent security processes will be pivotal to success in risk management recruitment as IT security professionals are faced with a whole host of new threats, legislation and technology. With security trends shaping many companies’ approach to risk and network threat here are some areas to consider when looking for IT security jobs:

The use of website cookies
This year many businesses will be forced to review their approach to cookies. In May 2011 it became illegal to plant a cookie on a user’s machine but very few have taken steps to comply. However the ICO have recently issued a warning to businesses and issued a deadline for the rules to be enforced. For those candidates looking at information security jobs this is one area to get to grips with as many firms have only five months to get their house in order.
Forthcoming data protection legislation

Early this year updated data protection legislation will be issued which aims to standardise regulations throughout the EU. Full details are unknown but for those in IT security it makes sense to start looking at how these new rules could affect their jobs.

Dealing with tablet and smartphone users
With more mobile devices being used in the workplace this is a huge area for those in risk management jobs. The head of data protection product management at Sophos, Mathias Pankert commented:

“With both IOS and Android, you don’t have the concept of an administrator anymore. The end user administers everything, and it is hard to impose things on the user or even prevent malware from coming on to the devices easily.”

To stand out in interviews understand new trends in IT security for 2012 – this is sure to impress a prospective employer.
