Skilled IT contractors in short supply according to REC report

Filed under: Recruitment General — Jonathan on February 22, 2012

The level of business analyst and information security contract jobs far outstripped suitable contractor stock in January 2012 according to a recent report.

The Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) revealed in its latest Report on Jobs that the shortage of contractors specializing in Citrix, .Net, Oracle and Firewall continued from 2011 into the New Year. The report highlights seven IT areas which proved to be difficult to fill with temporary staff.

The highest demand IT skills in the contract recruitment market is growing and is a reflection of the slight increase in demand for job seekers within the temporary IT recruitment market. The index for freelance IT recruitment candidates rose to 51.7 from 51.4 in December. However, year on year results show a significant drop from 61.2 in January 2010.
The decline in temporary contracts such as cyber security jobs can be attributed to the Agency Workers Regulations which were implemented in October last year but this is yet to be supported by strong evidence.

Kevin Green at the REC commented that companies were making “considerable use of flexible working arrangements”. He went on to state that improvement in the permanent job market was also gave room for optimism despite a challenging economy.
The demand for candidates in full time IT roles increased last month but the report highlighted that many businesses could be disappointed if looking to fill information security vacancies as full time candidates were found to be in short supply along with IT marketers, database administrators and developers.

For students hoping to break into the IT security market there is ample opportunity available for those with the right skills.
