New Glasgow hub to create technology jobs

Filed under: Cyber Security — Mark on June 8, 2012

A new hub for research is due to be set up in Glasgow at the University of Strathclyde.

Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, the largest contract research organisation in Europe, will establish their début UK centre at the new Technology and Innovation Centre at the university. It is set to provide a boost for recruitment in the technology sector so qualified technology professionals based in Glasgow seeking cyber security jobs or other vacancies in the sector should be watching this development carefully.

Aroundh 10 employees are expected to be taken on in the first year, with another 80, including postgraduate students, five years down the line.

Michael Russell, education secretary, said:

“Scottish universities are known around the world for their excellence and Glasgow has a global reputation for advanced research and technology.”

The centre’s focus will be on technology and laser research for the transport, energy, security and healthcare sectors, and has potential to inspire further UK-based research centres.

The university and Fraunhofer funded the photonics centre, along with the Scottish Funding Council, the Scottish Enterprise and the Scottish government.

From the University of Strathclyde, Professor Jim McDonald, added:

“Our collaborative approach is … playing a critical role in the development of tomorrow’s highly-skilled graduates and next-generation leaders, ensuring our students’ education is informed by the very latest research and the needs of global employers.”

A hub similar to this was set up recently at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and Fraunhofer, who have used the MIT hub for inspiration, are seeking to establish further centres across Europe, the U.S. And Asia.
