Jobs market gives reasons to be positive

Filed under: Recruitment General — Mark on September 13, 2013

New data indicates that there has been some improvement in the jobs market amid recovery of the UK economy. Property, construction and manufacturing may be leading the way, but those seeking information security jobs – as well as positions in other sectors – can take comfort from the news.

August’s job index from Reed revealed a 16 per cent rise in employment opportunities against the same point last year. Property and construction were top of the pile, showing a 67 per cent increase.

The index is at 161 – an improvement on 138, where it stood at the start of 2013.

Scotland showed the most impressive increase in job opportunities for the third consecutive month. The one region showing a decline was Northern Ireland and that was by a mere two per cent.

James Reed, chair of said about the latest numbers:

“The jobs market has certainly been buoyant this summer.”

The managing director for manufacturing recruitment firm MRL said that the rise of employment in his industry started five months earlier. He told

“If someone got a job offer 12 months ago, it was fairly cut and dry they would take the role.”

Now, he says it is the complete opposite, with some candidates able to choose from four or five offers.

He added that now, the opposite is true, with some jobseekers able to pick from several offers.

The strong indicators were mirrored earlier during the week with a rise to 57.2 for the Markit/CIPS Purchasing Managers’ Index recorded for August – a sign of growth.

Other figures have pointed to a growth in the number of job vacancies listed online this summer.
