January 2012 sees increase in recruitment

Filed under: Recruitment General — Stephanie on February 20, 2012

A recent report by the Recruitment and Employment Federation (REC) has given graduates new hope on the job market with figures showing an increase in the amount of employers recruiting last month with specialist sectors such as IT and engineering showing growth.

The monthly index highlighted that recruitment rose from 48.5 to 51.2 in January 2012 which signals a change in the right direction as index figures above 50 indicate the recruitment market is growing rather than contracting.

The CEO at REC, Kevin Green commented that the report offers reasons to be optimistic and is in line with a growing confidence from both businesses and consumers. This bodes well for students hoping to break into information security jobs as the IT sector was highlighted as one of the main sectors that is experiencing growth and high demand. Green went on to say:

“This is the first positive indicator for some time that employers are looking to hire staff despite the ongoing weakness of the economy. It is particularly encouraging that six out of eight sectors surveyed show growth in demand, including engineering, IT and office professionals.”

During the challenging economic restraints of 2008-09 unemployment hit unprecedented heights with the percentage unemployed at its worst for 17 years. Although the recruitment market has improved it has done so at a very slow pace over the past two years. However, those looking for graduate information security jobs can approach the UK recruitment market more confidently now as companies start to increase their headcount again.
