Graduate employers opting for candidates with work experience

Filed under: IT Security — Jonathan on January 22, 2012

New research predicts that employers will recruit an increase of 6.4 percent graduates this year. However those graduates will little or no work experience are unlikely to be recruited by some of the top companies with graduate schemes.

This latest study called ‘The Graduate Market in 2012’ looks at the range of graduate vacancies available as well as entry salaries across some of the UK’s most prestigious graduate employers. High Fliers Research carried out the study and found that 36 percent of graduate jobs are likely to be taken by candidates with previous work experience within the company carried out whilst at university.

50 percent of the businesses surveyed revealed that they have upped the graduate job roles available this year with additional vacancies being created in over 60 percent of the industries studied. An increase was also reported in the public sector despite the various government cuts last year. There are a range of opportunities available across finance, IT and retail sectors.

Interest for positions rose by 19 percent in the graduate sector in 2012 with many already closing their recruitment programmes for the year. Starting salaries are set to remain static again at £29,000.

In the IT sector the increase in graduate jobs available this year stands at 36 percent but competition in areas such as IT security jobs remains fierce making it extremely important for candidates to aim for the best accreditations and work experience with a suitable firm. Work experience programmes are widespread with graduate employers so those looking for graduate cyber security jobs would be well advised to target companies offering these forms of placement whilst studying.
