Continued demand for IT contractors in February

Filed under: Recruitment General — Mark on March 22, 2012

IT contractors experienced an increase in demand at the start of the year and this was continued in February, with the best results for temporary IT staff since August 2010. The Recruitment and Employment Confederation published the latest Report on Jobs recently, with demand for IT contractors reaching 53.9.

REC analyses eight prime sectors in the temporary staff market and IT is now in third place for demand. This time last year IT demand was in first position at 63.2. Although this year’s figures are lower than in the past, the hiring of temporary IT staff is back in the recruitment agenda of many companies.

The report also highlighted that within the permanent sector IT and computing was in the most demand, well ahead of the remaining seven sectors. Given a huge shortage of developers, SAP specialists and project managers, and coupled with the push across the UK for highly skilled people in information security jobs, IT is a great sector to build a career in.

Within the contract sector CIM was the one area where there is a skill set shortage. This is a vast improvement on January when the REC reported a significant list of IT skills lacking in the temporary and permanent sector.

The report showed that there is need within end user companies for high technical skill and accreditation. However, the REC revealed that end users were likely to show ‘cautious optimism’ regarding recruitment, but contractors would not be too affected by the Agency Workers Regulations.
